GTR

Found this gem while walking around K-town earlier. See more on my Flickr. For those who know very little about this beast, it’s not available in America. Seeing it here in NYC is quite a treat. The steering is on the right side and has the most massive grapefruit shooters for an exhaust. The new version is in testing now and should be out shortly. The new one is suppose to be US Spec’d. I can’t wait till it hits the shores.

Trillian Astra

I don’t miss Windows much. There are a few programs I would love to see on the Mac but I’ve learned to live without it, especially having trusty Parallels boot up when I needed it to. Here’s a list of programs that I would love to see on the Mac, either for the first time or improve upon:

  1. Microsoft Project
  2. Microsoft Outlook (not that weak Entourage version with a half-ass exchange support)
  3. Intuit Quicken (the Mac version really does suck, especially when it comes to handling user generated firms).
  4. Visio (I love OmniGraffle but a bunch of our clients use Visio so having a native version on the mac would be great).
  5. Trillian (last but not least which is the subject of this post).

Trillian is my favorite program on the Windows platform. I do a lot of IM communication on all IM platforms for my daily work so it was indispensable to me. It is one of the few programs I feel that’s worth every penny. As I was browsing on TUAW today, I noticed a post highlighting that Cerulean Studios new version of Trillian (Astra) has a web interface that may work with iPhone and that the team over there are working hard to get it running properly. This is great news. I took a gander over at their site and to my surprise, I saw a little tidbit about their IMCore. Long story short, IMCore is their new technology for unified IMs. IMCore may also mean that they can compile for OS/X!!! This is great news for me since I’ve been a fan of their product for quite some time and would love to use Trillian on the Mac. I love Adium and the folks there have created a great product but I’m tired of waiting for video support. Going back to iChat or using Skype every time I want to do video messaging is a pain for me. Hopefully Trillian for Mac will support video. The Mac will be almost perfect if this happens.

Jose has a pretty cool blog post on the iPhone and MMS.  It’s a good read.  Anybody else hate MMS?  I just wish I could send MMS to anyone independant of carriers.

iPhone

Really, this may be my last post on the matter. More iPhone observations:1. Mail: Forwarding does not include the full email thread

2. Mail: No BCC field at all

3. SMS: No group messaging, have to add one person at a time.

4. Calendar: No selection on which calendar to add to.

5. Calendar: Syncs to iCal with a category called “Home”. Very annoying

6. Phone: No Recently Dialed and Received button, just all and missed.

7. Mail: quick way to delete, no quick way to mark messages read

8. Mail: GMail rules are not applied to my inbox

9. Mail: Cannot create folders

10. Mail: No spam function

11. Notes: No syncing (but we can imagine that changing when Leopard is out).

12. Mail, SMS: Could’ve just added a period for the standard keyboard layout. Very annoying to add it by pressing symbols.

13. Wifi: Should save automatically the profiles I’ve entered before (non-broadcasting, WPA enabled).

I guess I’ll wait like everyone else for the Software Update and hope it’ll get better.

Real World iPhone use

July 2nd, 2007

I’ll keep this brief since I’m sure everyone’s a bit tired of all this “iPhone” business circulating around everywhere.

1. The iPhone was activated Sunday morning but with some issues. I was able to place and receive calls but my sms messages weren’t coming through if they were coming from other carriers. I’m suspecting that it’s not totally AT&T’s fault but really, someone needs to be blamed for that.

2. BMW says that all the 2007 models are compatible with the iPhone. You can check out the news here. I have a 2005 e46 with Bluetooth and BMW Assist and it synced right up with my iPhone. My whole phonebook was uploaded to the car in a flash. My Treo had more Bluetooth issues and only loaded my quick numbers (shortcuts) into the car which was nice when it worked. Having all my contacts makes it really hard to scroll through. I hope something can be done about this but it’s doubtful. At least the Bluetooth works which I’m really happy about.

3. EDGE speed is ok and WiFi is pretty nice. I’m just wondering how long it’ll take before I can use the iPhone as my modem for my MacBook Pro. I loved that feature about the Treo.

4. This is definitely the best iPod despite the storage space limitations. I currently have a 30gig 5th gen iPod and love it.

5. Touch typing is actually pretty easy and will only get easier. Most bloggers suggested to “Trust the Keyboard”. I couldn’t agree more. Think of it more like “T9 for qwerty with a better vocabulary”. Watch this video for good measures.

6. Mail Client: I like it but it can be better. GMail for example just dumps all my mail into the inbox, ignoring my labels and archive settings. Does someone know something that I don’t? I want this feature. Is it hard to incorporate this Apple/Google? I also wish there was a spam button I can press to get rid of some of my junk mail.

7. Battery seems to last about a day, maybe a bit less. I’m used to it though since I used to have 2 Treos that sucked battery in similar fashion. More battery news for the iPhone here from Apple.

8. Can someone please publish a really accurate and comprehensive list of all the peripherals that can work with the iPhone. I have a ton of iPod 30pin accesories I’d like to use without damaging the phone (just being a bit cautious).

9. Is there a decent insurance policy out there for this device. 500,000+ device sold in one day (probably the most successful one day launch of a mobile device ever) and I can’t seem to find any proper insurace policy for it… And please don’t tell me you can get AppleCare because it’s not out yet and if you lose your phone, you can’t call someone like Asurion and get a replacement.

I think that’s it for now. I’ll post more stuff on later if it’s something I’ve noticed and if it doesn’t show up on the blogosphere.
