Wow. Just when I thought Microsoft had finally turned the corner and plans on delivering a decent OS, they decided to be boneheads. Engadget has a post on the different versions of Windows 7 that they’re planning to sell. Here they are
- Windows 7: Starter
- Windows 7: Home Basic (for emerging markets)
- Windows 7: Home Premium
- Windows 7: Professional
- Windows 7: Enterprise
- Windows 7: Ultimate
I really can’t understand why they can’t be a little more like Apple and just narrow it down to a few versions (Single, Family). Is it really neccessary to create all these versions? I’m sure there’s a good reason to have them but if other OS distros can manage with 1 or 2, why can’t MS?
Top it off, Windows 7 Starter Edition allows for a whopping 3 applications to run concurrently. WTF is the point of that?
I agree with the CNET article that MS will most likely just sell the Home and Professional versions in the US. I wonder who will get the Starter verions? To me it seems like MS is making a bonehead move by severely limiting the use of it’s OS. It’s decisions like these where I see the Googleverse taking over. Chrome and Google Apps will thrive in this environment. Aside from logging into Windows, everything will be done through the browser.
